Cooking Grease and Your Septic Tank: Where That Fat Actually Ends Up
Pour a pan of bacon grease down the kitchen sink and it goes away. That's the problem β it goes away from you, but it doesn't leave the property. On a septic system that grease travels about ten feet, hits the cold water sitting in your tank, and stops cold. Fats, oils, and grease don't dissolve. They congeal, they float, and they stay.

What your septic tank is trying to do

Lose capacity at the top and you shorten the interval between pump-outs. Let the crust reach the outlet and you start killing the field. Neither one announces itself β by the time the yard is soggy, the damage is already done.
Where the grease should go instead
- Let it cool and can it. Pour warm grease into an old can or jar, let it solidify, and put it in the trash. A coffee can by the stove handles a week of cooking.
- Wipe greasy pans before washing. A paper towel and the trash catches the film that a rinse would otherwise send down the drain.
- Skip the garbage disposal for fatty scraps. Grinding food up doesn't change the chemistry β it just delivers the fat to the tank faster.
- Hot water is a trick, not a fix. Flushing grease with hot water only moves the clog further down the line before it cools and sets. It always cools.
