Do Septic Additives and Enzyme Treatments Actually Work?
Walk down the cleaning aisle at any hardware store and you'll find a shelf of powders, packets, and jugs promising to keep your septic system running forever. Flush one down the toilet a month, the box says, and you can forget the pump truck ever existed. It's a tempting pitch for anyone who's ever paid for a pump-out. It's also mostly marketing.
Ask a pump-truck driver off the record what they think of the monthly packets and you'll get the same shrug every time. The additives don't hurt much, they don't help much, and the tank was already doing fine without them.
What's actually living in your tank
A septic tank is a slow, warm, oxygen-starved digester. Every time you flush, you send it a fresh load of exactly the bacteria it runs on β the ones from your own gut. A working tank is already packed with billions of them, breaking down solids around the clock. It doesn't run low. You reseed it every single day just by using the toilet.

Skip the pump-outs on the promise of a monthly powder and you eventually push that sludge layer up until it starts washing out into the drain field. Once solids reach the field and clog the soil, you're not looking at a $350 pump-out anymore β you're looking at a drain field replacement that runs into five figures.

- Keep the grease and 'flushables' out. Neither one breaks down, additive or not.
